I’ve just left my job at the helium balloon factory. Well no-one’s going to talk to me like that! Still, enough of my grumbles. I’d better tell you about myself. Friends say I’m charming, intelligent, good company, loyal, kind, thoughtful and magnanimous. It’s amazing what people will say when plied with alcohol. I was however careful to limit their intake to ensure they could pronounce “magnanimous”.

I have several interests including music ranging from classical through folk, jazz, new age to progressive rock. I admit to struggling with rap though, but I accept it’s very clever – my age I guess. I also like the theatre and cinema and nice food and drink but I’m not a gourmet. I enjoy socialising in pubs free from large screen TVs and gambling machines.

I also like walking on the beach and in the countryside but not in horizontal rain if you please!

Accessibility Welcome to the very special history of Ripon Cathedral. We can trace our foundation to the middle of the seventh century, when the monastery established on this site was a power- house in the development of Christianity in England and abroad. The present medieval building is on the site of the stone church built at that time, and beneath the crossing we still have the original seventh-century crypt, where an unbroken tradition of worship continues to this day.

The original gargoyle retained much more legible stonework than the other two which were replaced, making this a particularly demanding commission for stone carver Martin Coward. He was tasked with producing a design that would reproduce the original gargoyle and inventively extrapolate the missing features. Initially, two gargoyles were identified by inspection from the ground as being eroded beyond conservation or repair and these relict stones were the focus of a competition to select carvers to design and carve replacements.

A third gargoyle was later added when, on close inspection, it too was discovered to be beyond repair. This article focusses on the competition and aims to provide a case study for commissioning works of this type to identify and nurture carving talent. The Early English west front was commenced in the early 13th century, while the north presbytery was partly rebuilt in the late 13th century.

Major repairs were required when the central tower partially collapsed c , and in the central spire collapsed, prompting major rebuilding of the presbytery and south transepts and the removal of the west spires. Restoration and re-ordering work was carried out in the Victorian period, most extensively by George Gilbert Scott, and further conservation and repair continued in the 20th century. Some of this Victorian and later work is of the highest quality and invention, defining aspects of the current character of the cathedral.

It includes some very strong, wonderfully grotesque gargoyle replacements. The surviving 12th-century fabric was of particular importance for its ground-breaking use of architectural forms. It was contemporary with the new work of the Canterbury Cathedral choir following the fire and exemplifies the development of early Gothic in the north of England. This north east portion of the cathedral is therefore of the highest national significance.

Gargoyles the name comes from the Latin gargula, meaning throat were introduced to medieval cathedrals from around
