Today I want to talk about one of those social issues that keeps popping up: Some people cannot enjoy the solo queue game, and Valve is obligated to offer them a form of casual matchmaking so they can play with their friends. The matchmaker does what it can to make decently competitive games while not allowing queue times to skyrocket, but the results are not pretty. The picture here is a little clouded. We can only see who these players have played with in the past month, inactive players are not filtered out, and Dotabuff cannot show us players who have decided the remain anonymous. Solo queue players who are constantly matched into games that we know are not statistically competitive but that are created for expediency. What this does is create a burnout point, where the primary way these players interact with the game is so frustrating that they lose interest in the game as a whole. Some of these players will quietly quit, or at least scale back their playtime, and we will then just throw the next tier of players into the grinder so that the cycle can continue.

The difference is, in HoN, even though you can spot a smurf, you can’t avoid playing against him since you’re already matched against him. That is pretty cool, and I think it will be effective. Dota on the whole has much better smurf protection ever now then HoN did when I played.

SHARE Although studying creativity is considered a legitimate scientific discipline nowadays, it is still a very young one. In the early s, a psychologist named J. Guilford was one of the first academic researchers who dared to conduct a study of creativity. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page. Today many people are familiar with this puzzle and its solution. In the s, however, very few were even aware of its existence, even though it had been around for almost a century.
If you have tried solving this puzzle, you can confirm that your first attempts usually involve sketching lines inside the imaginary square. The correct solution, however, requires you to draw lines that extend beyond the area defined by the dots. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. The symmetry, the beautiful simplicity of the solution, and the fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford and the readers of his books to leap to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box.

Rules are enforced by the players themselves. If you think someone in your game broke a rule, you can easily punish them. By default all players hold the power to punish everyone else. This guarantees that there is always someone there to see evil. Even if someone bullies someone else in private, the victim can easily record the event and have the bully punished.
